My coming together with Wendy was serendipity. I had been hearing from my best
friend in Hingham, MA how she was planning a vegetable garden for the summer.
“Oh, I would love to have a garden but I wouldn’t know where to begin,” I responded.
With that, I opened the local paper, *The Two River Times*, and my eyes fell
right on the article about Wendy, aka, the Front Yard Farmer. I immediately
picked up the phone and sent out my SOS. Wendy was quick to respond. She came
to my house and helped determine the best location for the garden. My cousin
built a beautiful fence, keeping in mind to dig a trench for chicken wire at
least a foot deep, to keep out deer and other animals. After discussing what
vegetables my family wanted, Wendy set to work building the four non-toxic
raised beds. Then came the incredibly rich organic soil, the seeds and the
plants. Now we just had to wait. Within weeks, the seeds were sprouting. My
children were amazed and intrigued. Every day we learned something new. The
garden produced all summer: baby bell eggplants, climbing beans, cucumbers,
tomatoes, lettuce, peppers, swiss chard, onions, squash, carrots and kale.
Sometimes I was reluctant to harvest the vegetables, I didn’t want to alter
the beauty of the garden. We enjoyed the garden all summer and now are enjoying
it in the winter. We now have broccoli, more carrots and tons lettuce. Thanks
to Wendy, we also have a cold frame to protect the vegetables from frost. This
Thanksgiving, our family will be giving thanks for Wendy’s friendship, knowledge,
her love of the earth, and for all she has taught us!
